Types of Escape Room Players…
The whole point of an escape room is to follow the story, track down clues, find keys, crack codes and solve puzzles…
At least, that’s what we thought.
Then a team of 12-year-olds came along and taught us something important.
Turns out, there are at least two types of escape room players!
1. The Adventure Seekers
These are the players who get lost in the story. They explore the room, follow the clues, piece together the plot and let the game guide them from one puzzle to the next.
They investigate, think, debate, laugh and enjoy those “Aha! Now it makes sense!” moments.
For them, it’s not just about escaping. It’s about enjoying the adventure along the way.
2. The Lock Ninjas
We once welcomed a team of 12-year-olds who managed to escape in less than FIVE minutes!
They weren’t exactly following the story. They were following the locks.
Rather than solving every puzzle in the intended order, they found ways to skip steps and open locks before the game had even given them a reason to do so.
Codes? Challenges to crack. Locks? Personal enemies. A box that isn’t supposed to open yet?
Challenge accepted!
They found their own challenge. And we learned something too.
So, what did we do?
We redesigned, rearranged and fine-tuned parts of the game. Because a good escape room needs to keep even the most unexpectedly creative players on their toes!
But between us… can we be honest for a second?
If you sign up for an escape room adventure, is getting straight to the end in five minutes really the best part?
If all you want to do is open locks, you could buy 20 different padlocks from your local hardware shop, set random codes on them and spend a lovely evening cracking them open from the comfort of your sofa.
At The Lost Exit, the lock isn’t the adventure. It’s just one part of it.
The real fun is investigating, spotting connections, sharing ideas, discovering the story and experiencing that wonderful moment when everything finally clicks into place.
Of course, everyone has their own playing style. And when someone surprises us with an unexpected solution, we can learn from that too!
Now we want to know…
Which type are YOU?
The Adventure Seeker who enjoys the journey?
Or the Lock Ninja who simply refuses to let a padlock win?
Put yourself and your team to the test on one of The Lost Exit’s adventures!
